OBITUARY
Captain J. Burton Davies
Deep regret will be felt by a wide circle of friends in New Zealand at the death in London on Sunday last of Captain J. Burton Davies, after a long illness. Captain Burton Davies had a long record of service with the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, having served iu the vessels of this company as officer and commander, in which capacities he made numerous voyages from the United Kingdom to New Zealand and to Australia. He was second officer of the Tongariro when this vessel struck Bull Rock, Alahia Peninsula, on August 30, 1910, and became a total wreck. In 1919 he was chief officer of the Ruapehu and was appointed to his first command in 1920 as captain of the Whakatane, which was at that time one of the company’s cadet ships. He later served as commander of the Hurunui, Tongariro, and Hertford, making his last voyage to New Zealand in the lastmentioned vessel toward the end of 1930.
Captain Burton Davies was a keen follower of sport, being an excellent tennis player and amateur boxer. He was also expert in the art of woodcarving. His mother lives in Auckland.
Mr. L. Sowman , 'The death occurred on Thursday of Air. Leonard Sowman, Turakiua, aged 58. Air. Sowman, who was, for a number of years, in the tobacconist trade, was well known in Wellington. About four years ago he went to take up business in Hastings and some months ago left Hastings for Turakina. He leaves a widow and family. Sister Mary Nolasco The death occurred in Palmerston North after a long illness of Sister Alary Nolasco, a member of the community of the Sisters of Mercy and a member of a well-known Wellington Catholic family, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. She completed her education at St. Alary’s College. Hill Street, Wellington, entering the novitate there in 1924. She was a successful teacher in several ’ schools, including Buckle Street and Seatoun, Wellington, Palmerston North and Alarton. She endeared herself not only to her pupils, many of whom sent her tokens of their gratitude and affection during her illness, but to members of her community as ■well. Mass was celebrated in the convent chapel by the Right Rev. AlacAlanus, and the burial took place in Terrace End cemetery, her uncle, Father P. Scanlon, S.M., Temuka, officiating at the graveside. Fathers Lenihan (Alarton), Keegan and Jansen were also present. Mrs. A. Willan The death occurred in Dannevirke of Mrs. Agnes Willan, a -well-known resident of the town and formerly of the Umutaoroa district, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. Born in Taradale 63 years ago, Mrs. Willan ■went to Dannevirke as a child with her parents, the late Air. and Airs. Thomas Miller, a pioneer family of Southern Hawke’s Bay. She received her education at Dannevirke North School, and also at the Napier Convent. Till about four years ago she had spent most of her married life in Umutaoroa, where her husband was engaged in farming. Airs. Willan was a keen horticulturist, and was th£_pldest exhibitor at the annual shows of theiDannevirke Horticultural Society, being also a pioneer memb'er of the society. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, and was prominently associated with the women’s activities of the church. Airs. Willan is survived by three daughters, Airs. J. A. Jarvis (Nelson), Mrs. R. Hates (Waipatiki), and Airs. R. ChriStison (Dannevirke), and two song. Messrs. Richard Willan (West Coast, South Island) and Massey Willan (Dannevirke), and also eight brothers and one sister. Her husband predeceased her three years ago.
