ARMY EQUIPMENT

Orders Placed For Boots And Clothing

Orders had been placed for boots and clothing for the expanded Territorial Force lin'd those members of the National Military Reserve who would be equipped, said the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, yesterday. .Mr. Jones said that the Army Department placed orders for such equipment every year, but the expansion of tile Territorial Army, the Territorial Air Force,' and the establishment of a reserve, together with the need for replenishing stocks, had led to orders being placed for 16,000 pairs of boots. The manufacture of these would be undertaken by a number of factories throughout the Dominion, but all footwear factories would not receive orders as some did not manufacture military boots. Orders had also been placed with the different woollen manufacturing companies for a substantial quantity of khaki cloth for uniforms and for other woollen articles. / - —- FOOTWEAR ASSOCIATION’S COMMENT The statement by Mr. A. E. W. McDonald, a footwear merchant of Invercargill about the manufacture of footwear for the New Zealand militaiy forces was the subject of comment yesterday by the secretary of the NevZealand Footwear Manufacturers’ Association, Mr. Rocke O’Shea. Mr. McDonald had said, according to a report from Invercargill yesterday, that every boot factory in New Zealand had secured orders for the manufacture of military footwear, that a quota had been allotted to every factory, and that no factory could decline the orders. Mr. O’Shea’s comment was, Dlr. McDonald has apparently been badly misinformed.”
