Depression Moving Slowly

South-Eastward

Following is the weather report and the forecast for wind and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today : — „ General situation: A depression centred north of the Auckland peninsula is moving slowly south-eastward, and pressure is also very low over Tasmania.

Forecast. —Winds: Moderate to fresh easterly winds over the northern portion of the North Island, gradually turning to south and south-westerly. Light to moderate and variable elsewhere, with north-east to east predominating at first, but north-west gradually freshening in the far south. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rather rough to rough north of East Cape; slight elsewhere, but rising somewhat on the east coast and in the far south. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate east to south-east winds and moderate seas in the northern portion. Variable winds with north-westerly gradually predominating and slight but increasing seas in the southern portion.

YESTERDAY’S WEATHER

Wellington: Though there was mist on the low levels in the morning and the cloud increased during the day, the day was chiefly fine and mild with very little wind. Minimum temperature Wednesday, 47.1 degrees; maximum yesterday, 59.9 degrees; at 3 p.m. yesterday, 55.8 degrees; barometer, 1008.9 millibars.

Palmerston North: Fine and sunny, with passing clouds and a north-east wind.

Napier and Hastings: The morning was cold and hpavily overcast, with light showers. Drizzling rain began early in the- afternoon, some heavy falls occurring before evening. There was a light north-easterly breeze. Wanganui: Fine with sunshine all day. The barometer reading was 1008 millibars.

New Plymouth: Bright and sunny in the morning, mild; later cloudy and partially overcast, with a colder easterly wind. Barometer at 5 p.m., 1004 millibars.

Masterton: Fine, sunny day; warm temperatures; light westerly wind. Waipukurau: Dull and overcast, with occasional showers. Maximum temperature, 54 degrees. Barometer very steady, the reading at 7 p.m. being 1012 millibars. Auckland: Showery conditions in the morning were followed by overcast weather, with a strong east-north-east wind. Maximum temperature, 60 degrees. Barometric pressure had a falling tendency and at 5 p.m. the reading was 29.62 inches, 1003 millibars.

Christchurch: Fine and mild, with bright sunshine in the late morning and early afternoon. A slight south-west breeze in the morning and a light easterly, with mist, in the evening after a calm afternoon. Maximum temperature, 54.9 degrees. The barometer fell slowly to 1009.3 millibars at 5 p.m. « Dunedin: The morning was very hazy, but the sun broke through well before midday. Temperature rose to a maximum of 66 degrees. There was practically no wind. Conditions generally were pleasant. The barometer fell slightly to 1011, millibars.
