Centennial Fixture For Wellington

The various organizations concerned with arrangements for Horticulture Week for 1940 have decided to hold their annual conferences in Wellington during the week beginning on Sunday, January -8. Mr. F. S. Pope, president of the Institute of Horticulture, Mr. G. S. Nicol, of the Horticulture Trades Association, and Mr. 11. W. Millen, secretary of the Wellington Horticultural Society, attended the annual' meeting recently of the Hutt Valley Hortitcultural Society, the object’’being to seek the co-operation or the Hutt Valley society in arranging for a national flower in M ellington. , .Mr. Nicol said it was intended to hold tlie show on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 30. and also on the Wednesday. Ou the motion of the president of the Hutt Valley society, Mr. J. S. Barton, it was decided to take all the required steps to co-operate. • In answer to Mr. G. W. Cairns, Mr. Pope said there was a possibility of the show being held in .the exhibition buildings.

ANNUAL MEETING East Harbour Society The East Harbour Horti,cultuaL Society, which was launched by. Mrs. Knox Gilmer -15 months ago. held its first annual meeting recently. The president, Mr. E. H. Anderson, welcomed Mrs. Knox Gilmer to' the meeting and referred to her work for the society. In addition to presenting a rose bowl for competition, Mrs. Knox Gilmer hadalso given the money for another trophy. It had been suggested, the president added, that the money should be awarded for hydrangea competition. He congratulated the Eastbourne public on' their support and paid a tribute to the work. of the committee and of the secretary, Miss M. Wood. The membership had increased beyond the 273 mentioned in the annual report. Mrs. Knox Gilmer congratulated the president and his executive on the excellent work done in the eastern suburbs during, the year. She knew of no cither horticultural society in New Zealand which had made such an advance in one rear. She offered special praise for the work of Miss Wood. This, year there was more horticultural work in New Zealand than for many years past. It was hoped to have the most perfect blooms in the Dominion at the national flower show. The election of officers resulted ns follows: Patron, Mrs. Knox Gilmer; president, Mr. E. H. Anderson ; vice-presidents, Messrs. E. J. Righton, E. W. Wise, A. Atkinson, D. Bowie, C. 11. Child, J. B. Finlay, J. W. Heenan, T. W. Pilcher.. A. Walker. Misses M. Cooper, M. E. Magill; delegates to Wellington Horticultural Society, Mrs. Neylon Butler and Mr. J. Bennett; hon. auditor, Miss A. Robertson ; hon. secretary-treasurer, Miss M. Wood; assistant secretary, Miss V. Shortt; executive committee, Mesdames E. J. Righton, Neylon Butler. A. J. Hollis and J. W. Tloenan, Misses M. E. Greenwood, N. Gibb and A. Hursthouse, Messrs. E. J. .'Righton, J. .Bennett, W. Hutchings, AV. J. Millen. J. 11. Torlesse, C. M. Hill. E. Young, J. Hodges and D. Coord.
