Vaals In Second Place
The Sou-in-Law sire, Beau Pere, gained fourteenth place on the Domiiiiou sires list last season, with his first crop of two-year-olds, who won £5935. With another month of the current season to go, he is in an unassailable position, his stock having won in the Dominion 50 races and stakes and trophies worth £17,635. Vaals, whose position has improved very greatly in the last two years,' has moved up from wixth place with £8286 10/- to second with £14,649. his representatives having won the same number of races as the Beau Peres. After an unbroken sequence of seven years as the premier sire of New Zealand, Hunting Song is at present in third place, £374 behind Vaals. For the first time since the 1933-34 season, his stock have won fewer than 100 races, but he still can claim the distinction of having by far the largest number of wins and__ placings against his name, these being 75 and 174 respectively. . / For many years Lord Quex has occupied a prominent place in the list, although he has never been at the head, lie was- second in 1931 and again last year, third in 1932, fifth in 1933 and 1935. This year he appears to be entrenched in fourth place, with 40 races and £12,913 in stakes. From third place in the two previous years. Acre, who died in 1936, has dropped to fifth, but his youngest stock maintained a high average with 37 wins, valued at £10,405. Balboa, whose record has been compiled mostly in Otago and Southland, has had his best year as a_ progenitor, his family having secured £9513. from 58'wins and 95 placings, lie is sixth, and, although two years ago he gained fifth place, his representatives on that occasion had amassed only £8129. . Siegfried’s position at present is ' the same as at the end of last season, namely, seventh, with 43 .wins, but his total has increased from £8286/5/- to £9145. In aggregate stakes, the stock of Lackham have done better this term than ever before, their record being 50, wins and £B4Ol. Chief Ruler and Defoe are pressing him closely for eighth place, and an extra success for either of the other two may depose him. The stock of four horses.’have won between £6OOO and £7OOO. They are the defunct sires, Robespierre, The Ace, Limond and Surveyor, all of whom have made their mark in the breeding world.
