Colourful Scene In Upper House
WATCHED FROM CROWDED GALLERIES The unusually fine weather for the opening of Parliament yesterday afternoon drew a large crowd to watch the arrival of the Governor-General Lord Galway and his suite and the inspection of the guard of honour. For the women, the occasion has always been held a fashionable one, and the packed galleries of the Legislative Council presented a smart and colourful scene. Many women wore furs, but in keeping with the weather, many gay suits and ensembles were conspicuous. The floor of the chamber presented an impressive sight. Al embers of the Legislative Council, in formal evening dress, and two judges, resplendent in scarlet robes, were in the places of honour near the “throne.” When all were seated, her Excellency Lady Galway arrived, attended by Captain Lord Dormer. She was met at the door of the Council Chamber by Mr. C. Al. Bothamley, who conducted her to the dais, where Sir Walter Carncross presented her with a handsome bouquet of pink earnations and sweet peas wflth a mauve ribbon bow. Lady Galway was wearing a handsome ensemble in woodland violet
with a dark lilac sash and trimmings.
Her broad-brimmed violet hat was swathed with a dark band in the lilac shade on the crown.
Her four children were present in the gallery with Airs. R. G G. Byron. The Hon. Simon Monckton Arundel sat with his sisters, the Hous. Alary, Isabel and Celia Alonekton, who were dressed alike in smart brown tweed coats in princess style, with dark brown hats and velvet cravats.
His Excellency w'as preceded by Black Rod, and was followed by representatives of the army and navy us well as by his own personal staff. The Speech from the Throne followed. On one side of the dais sat the ladies privileged to be on the floor of the Council Chamber. These were:—Airs. P. Fraser, who wore a smart grey nstrachan. coat with a black felt hat; Airs. H. G. R. Alason, wearing a winecoloure'd costume with a wine hat and a brown fur cape; Airs. AV. E. Barnard’s frock was of black wool crepe trimmed with white, worn with a black hat; Mrs. Semple wore a blaclr silk striped ensemble with a skunk wrap and black hat; Airs. F. Jones was in a two-piece suit of navy blue with brown furs; Airs. Sullivan wore a black costume; Airs. W. E. Parry’s ensemble was of black wool with a black fur cape; Lady Carncross wore a black ensemble relieved with white embroidery at the throat, a black hat, and silver fox fur; Lady Myers wore a blue frock under an ermine coat and a blue hat: and Airs. G. W. Forbes was in a black tailored suit with white ermine tippet and black hat. In the Galleries.
