Stand

AUCKLAND, June 28.
The decision of the Clapham Conservative Association to select a young New Zealander, Mr. Roy Lowndes, as its Parliamentary candidate for the general election in November is reported in advice received in the Dominion. Mr. Lown'des has been nominated in succession to Sir John Leigh, who is not seeking re-election, after being member of Parliament for the Clapham Division of Wandsworth since 1922. When in New Zealand it was Mr. Lowndes’s intention to enter the teaching profession, and. in 1932 and 1933 he studied at both Wellington and Auckland Training Colleges. As a student he was regarded as a keen debater, with a 'wide background of knowledge, as well as an enthusiastic musician. When students of the Auckland Training College produced “The Pirates of Penzance” in 1933 he ably fllled , 'the role of Major-General. After resigning from the teaching profession Mr. Lowndes travelled to England some years ago. He has since taken an active interest in political affairs in Britain.
