ORAKEI LAND

Notice To Quit Served • On Maoris OWNERSHIP DISPUTE By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 20, A further stage in the long-standing dispute over the ownership of what is known as “church site” on the hills above Okahu Bay, Orakei, has been reached. The Maori occupants of four properties of the area have received formal notice that they are living on Crown land, which they are required to vacate within the next week or so. Though there are only a few properties, they represent the home of about 30 Maori people. Protracted disputes over ownership, which came to a head when the Orakei State housing scheme was advanced, resulted in a decision that the area was Crown land and formal notice to quit is the outcome. This view, however, has been vigorously opposed by Native residents.
