Mews And Notes From Town And Country Pel one Townswomen’s Guild. in the absence of Airs. London, president of the recently-formed Petone Townswomen’.s Guild, owing to a recent illness, the vice-president, Mrs. J. C. Burns, was in the chair at the June meeting in the Orange Hall. Splendid progress- was reported by the various circles. * Mrs. G. Loddor, convener of the arts and crafts circle, held an afternoon at her home during tile month, and Mrs. E. .Marshall, Wellington, gave an interesting demonstration of barbola, pewter and brass work. Mrs. E. Fuller conducted a lirst-aid class in the Baptist Hall. These talks are to be given on the first AVednesday of each mouth. The dramatic amt singing circle, convened by Mrs. J. Brownie aud Mrs. Inglis spent an evening at Airs. Brownie's home and the convener of the gardening and garden exploration circle. Mrs. J. G. Burns, had arranged for a visit to the garden of Mrs. A. R. Gower. Lower Hutt, when a planting demonstration would lie given. Visits will be paid also to .Airs. S. J. Cook’s garden, when the topic will lie hydrangea culture, to Mr. Pilcher’s garden, when Mr. Pilcher will give advice on rose culture, and to Mrs. Knox Gilmer’s garden at Heretaunga. An interesting travel talk on England, the Continent and the Holy Land was given The hostesses were Mesdaines Al. C. Cunliffe, M. Aitken, M. Barlow and Miss Arcus. Navy League Auxiliary's Annual Meeting. Members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the AVeilington branch of the Navy League are advised that the annual
meeting of the auxiliary will be held at the Navy ix-ague office, Lambton Quay, on Monday. July 3, at 11 a.in. It is important that all members should attend and take part in the business of the annual meeting. It is considered that at no time has the educational work of the Navy League been
more necessary and more important as an influence ou public opinion in connexion with the Empire rearmament plans and the defence of New Zealand. At the present time, specially, there should be, on the part of worthy citizens, a strong desire and urge to join up as members of the Wellington Navy League.
Bring and Buy Afternoon.
A very successful afternoon, the proceeds of which will go toward the Y.AI.C.A. special drive, was held recently at the home of Mrs. AV. H. Stevens, Karori. An interesting demonstration of art work by Mrs. BrookeTaylor, songs by Mesdames W. Appleton and Stevens, accompanied by Mesdaines Saunders and Taylor, and also a novel competition, the prize for which was donated by Airs. BrookeTaylor, were features of the afternoon. At the close of the afternoon, Airs. Stevens, who was ably assisted by Airs. Appleton and Mrs. 11. Harvey, thanked members and friends of Group 1 of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, who helped to make the afternoon such a success.
First-Aid Classes. Considerable interest has been taken by the women of Karori in the formation of first-aid classes under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Association. ■ The first classes of a course of instruction will be held next Monday at 7.15 p.m. in the Marsden School. Interest in the subject of lirst-aid has grown to such an extent that it has been decided to form classes in the St. John Ambulance Hall, 29 Vivian Street, Wellington, and, with this purpose in view, a public meeting has been called at the hall for Thursday evening, at 7.15 o’clock.
