Sir George Barstow, deputy-chair-man of the Prudential Assurance Company, Limited, will arrive today at Auckland from Sydney by the Wanganella on a brief visit to New Zealand, accompanied by Lady Barstow and one of their sons. Sir George was for nearly 30 years an official of the British Treasury, and from 1919 to 1927 was Controller of Supply Services. Since 1928 he has been a British Government director of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. He will proceed to 'Wellington and return to leave by the Mqiiterey on Monday for San Francisco. Mr. F. M. Christian, Tauranga, was a visitor to Wellington yesterday. Mr. A. H. Anthony left Wellington for the south last night by the steamer express.
Mr. F. B. Cadman arrived at Wellington yesterday from Auckland by the Limited express. Mr. C. T. Halstead arrived at Wellington by the Limited express from Auckland yesterday. The R.t. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, travelled by air to Nelson from Wellington yesterday. Mr. F. P. Walsh, president of the Seamen’s Union, returned to Wellington from the South Island yesterday. The Rev. A. B. Kilroy, minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, ’Wellington, returned yesterday after a visit to the South Island. Mr. J. L. Passmore and Mr. A. E. Ansell, who have been on a business visit to Wellington, returned to Dunedin. last night by the steamer express. Mr. J. H. Middlecoat, New Zealand traffic manager of the Canadian National Railways, left Wellington for the north last night by the Limited express. Mr. A. Wyness, ’Wellington, managing director of His Master’s Voice (N.Z.) Ltd., left for the north last night by the Limited express. Mr. W. R. Carey, manager of the Kaiapoi Woollen Co., Ltd., was an arrival at Wellington yesterday by the steamer express from the South Island.
’The Rev. E. O. Blamires, who has been operated upon in St. George Hospital, Christchurch, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. He has written thanking members of the Wellington Rotary Club for their sympathy in his illness. Mr. Harold Silverstone, second son of Mr. Mark Silverstone, Dunedin, lias obtained tlie Ph.D. degree in statistics tit the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Silverstone has been studying under the famous ex-Duucdin student, Dr. A. C. Aitken, F.R.S., lecturer in acturial and statistical matter at Edinburgh University.
Mr. E. F. ’Wilcox, secretary to the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, arrived yesterday at Wellington to attend the annual conference of the Disabled Soldiers’ Civil Re-estab-lishment: League. With Mr. A. EHaynes (president) and Mr. D. W. Russell be will represent the Christchurch association at the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which will open today.
