CHESS MATCH
Auckland v. Wellington
The annual telegraphic competition to decide the chess club championship of New Zealand was commenced on Saturday evening, the North Island fixture being a 20-aside match between the Auckland and Wellington clubs. In the Wellington Chess Club’s rooms, clocks were used at the first 12 'boards, and two wires were laid on to each clubroom, one for incoming and the other for outgoing messages. This innovation worked well, and appears to have quite justified the extra expense involved. It is expected that when play ceases next Saturday there will be a smaller proportion of unfinished games than usual. The officials at this end, who contributed greatly to the success of the first evening’s play, were as follows: —Operators, Messrs. W. D. Kennedy and J. A. Bevin ; umpire, Mr. ,T. I. Goldsmith; captain. Mr. E. .1. Dyer; tellers. Messrs. .1. It. Gyles, J. D. Steele, W. J. Emery, and R. Fleischmann. The Auckland captain, Mr. C. P. Belton, is a nephew of Mr. F. J. Brooker, president of the Auckland club. 19/11/3:1. The pairings and openings used were as

Sicilian Auckland won the toss, and took first move at the odd-number.ed boards, and Wellington holds the advantage at board 10, where the northern player lost a bishop for a pawn because of a clerical error. The remaining 19 games are adjourned in a very even stale. The game at. board will probably be concluded over the board in the ordinary way. as Mr. Dyer is about, to visit Auckland. The local team lias been strengthened by the inclusion of Messrs. K. Beyer (champion of the W.M. Club), and E. Hutchings (the Miramar-Seatonn champion), who are now members of the parent club.
