MISSION TO LONDON
Object Of Mr. Nash’s Visit Reference to statements by London newspapers that the Minister oi Finance, Mr. Nash, was seeking a £6.000,000 loan for defence and a £10,000.000 Joan for the development of secondary industries in the Dominion, and. other purposes, was made yesterday by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage. “These newspaiters are simply guessing —they are making their own figures and basing articles on them,” he said. Mr. Savage said that Mr. Nash had gone Home to make arrangements about a loan falling due. That was number one. “Number two is to discuss our trade relations with Britain,” added Mr. Savage, '“and to get whatever relief we can to enable us to take more British goods than we are doing now. 1 cannot see any royal road to it, and I cannot see any definite amount. It is simply a matter of negotiation between a representative of this Government aud the authorities in Great Britain.” Attitude Of New Zealand Trading Banks When asked whether he wished to comment, upon the statement by the city editor, of the “Daily Herald.” London. that “some of the New Zealand banks are known to be hostile and to be working actively against Mr. Nash,” the chairman of the trading banks in New Zealand replied:— “We would simply refer the ‘Daily Herald’ to the Prime Minister. Mr. Savage, and to Mr. Nash. In view of Hie actual co-operation of all the six trading banks in steps taken to assist Mr. Nash’s approach to the London market, we cannot believe that either Mr. Savage or Mr. Nash would approve, of any statement so misrepresenting the attitude of the trading banks in New Zealand in this connexion.”
