IN KEEN DEMAND

Shoppers Buying Winter Clothing FIRMS’ RETURNS INCREASE The wintry weather last week has created a keen demand for warmer clothing in Wellington. Managers of several large retail firms interviewed yesterday said that right through the winter sales returns showed an increase compared with the corresponding time last year. A few persons have been buying imported lines in excess of their requirements, but the demand for goods, the importation of which has been prohibited, has not been very great. The manager of a firm which deals in all types of clothing said that the sales right through the winter had been very good. He considered that from the selling point of view the winter was now nearly over. The cold snap last week caused a fillip in business, said the manager of a firm which deals in the more expensive type of goods. Till then the sale of winter clothing was slow. Woollen dresses and costumes were in demand among women and’overcoats and warm underclothing were being bought by men.

He expected that most of the imported lines would lie out of stock within the next three months. His firm immediately ordered as large a quantity of summer clothing as possible when the import restrictions were imposed, and these goods were now being sold. They were in keen demand. Two lines which could not be imported, shoes and corsets, were being keenly sought after by shoppers, was the comment of a manager whose firm deals largely in women’s clothes. He considered that the returns this winter were much better than during the corresponding period last year.
