The refusal of the Comptroller of Customs to grant a licence for the importation of wash-boilers has held up the installation of this necessary utility in cottages which had been erected by the Chrislchnrch City Council for pensioners of tiie city. This was indicated in a report submitted to the city council tonight. A sub-committee consisting of the mayor, Mr. Macl'arlane. lite ehairman of tiie housing sub-eommil.tee, Cr. J. E. Jones, and the chief city inspector, Mr. J. W. Huggins, lias selected tenants for cottages being erected in Sydenham Park.
The report of the sub-committee stated : "It appears that suitable boilers are now being made by local firms, but the price of these as quoted by one of the firms is much in excess of the imported ones, the prices being £9 12/-, as against £B/8/-, an increase of £l/4/- for each boiler. There are 42 mills being erected, and the totfhl extra cost for local boilers would be £s<i 8/-. Tile committee has made representations to the Comptroller of Customs asking that lie reconsider ills decision Io refuse it licence to import the boilers.” Councillors asked during a short discussion whether the local product could not be used.
