RATES COMPARED

Where New Zealand Leads Dominion Special Service AUCKLAND. June 19. A comparison of New Zealand rates of pay for naval ratings, with those in operation in Australia am! in the Royal Navy was imide by a man who has a knowledge of the three branches of the service. He slated that such a comparison showed that the New Zealand and Australian rates were very much the same, ami the New Zealand rates were much higher than those in the Royal Navy About the only differences between New Zealand and Australia which he could call to mind were in marriage allowance and the children's allowance. The former, he saill. was slightly higher in New Zealand and the hitter was slightly lower. As for the pay of Royal Navy ratings, the ordinary seaman. entered after October I. 1925. received only 2/a day: an able seaman, after six years mail's service, 3/4: after that rales rose to up to 9/- a day for a chief |ietty olliecr. All these rates were as listed in 1935. ami they showed considerable inferiority when compared with th" New Zealand basic rate of 7/4. Tint same man slated that the complicated pay received by ratings in actual cash. keep, marriage .allowance, children’s allowance, badge allowance, etc., made it extremely dilliciill to measure a rating's pay against a civilian’s.
