The Peking correspondent of “The Times” says that the Japanese authorities are reported to have submitted new and far-reaching demands to the British Municipal Council in Tientsin. The Note is stated to include demands for a joint search by British and Japanese for. terrorists in the British concession, the engagement of Japanese advisers by the council and the extradition of any terrorists arrested by the British. It is stated that the measures contemplated by the Japanese include the taking over of all foreign concessions in Tientsin by the provisional government, the supervision of the concession councils by the Japanese and the encirclement of the concessions in order to reduce their importance. A message from Hong Kong states that the Japanese Cominan-der-in-Chief is conferring with British, French, and American representatives regarding the withdrawal of Japanese from the settlement at Kulangsu. JAPANESE PROTEST TO BRITAIN Kulangsu Landing An “Unfriendly Act” (Received May 23, 11.55 p.m.) SHANGHAI, May 23. The Japanese Consul-General in Amoy has protested to the British, French and American consulates against the landing of sailors at Kulangsu last week, which, lie said, was regarded as an unfriendly act, aud likely to have a most unpleasant effect. He reiterated Japan’s demands for the reorganization of the council.
