SOIL EROSION

Committee’s Work On Problem report to minister The work of the committee set. up by the Government in September last to report on the question of soil erosion was outlined by one of the members, Dr. 11. 11. Allan, at the annual meeting of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand yesterday in ’Wellington. ’ The committee was required to report within the specified terms of its order of reference, Dr: Allan said. It had held two meetings. At the first the whole country was divided into 19 major topographical units, and the committee discussed the present and past vegetation of those areas and the incidence of erosion. Each member of the committee drew up a report from his own point of view giving what information he could. These reports had been considered at the second meeting of the committee and discussed in detail. A sub-com-mittee was then charged with the task of collating these reports and of bringing down a report to be presented to the Minister. That was done, and the draft report had been approved. The terms of the report were, of course, confidential in the meantime, Dr. Allan said. The president, Professor W. P. Evans, said that the society had done all it could last, year in -impressing the importance of the problem on the Government. “It took more notice of our representations than it usually does in such things,” he added.
