CAPPING BALL
Graduates Attend At Close Of Ceremony The most important and keenly anticipated event of the student year, the Capping Ball, took place last night at the conclusion of the Victoria University College capping ceremony. Undergraduates and friends united in making the occasion one of informal . goodfellowship and in honouring the graduates, who were the guests, by attending in large numbers. As usual the ball was attended mainly by young people, though members of the professorial board, with their wives, were special guests. A profusion of flowers was used to decorate the Mayfair Cabaret, vivid iceland poppies and tawny chrysanthemums being arranged in stately clusters. Delicate pink chrysanthemums were used on the supper tables. Guests were received by Miss Helen Maysmor, ball convener, Miss Geraldine Kean, women’s vice-president of the stildeuts’ executive, Mr. R. W. Edgeley, president of the students’ executive, and Mr. B. Cristensen, ball convener. Miss Maysmor wore a frock of silver threaded blue georgette with laced cumberband, and silver neck ornament, and Miss Kean was in a bouffant frock of striped silk organdie. The ballroom presented a gay scene as the dancers took the floor at the commencement of each dance. The romantic full skirted frocks so much favoured by this season’s fashions, were shown to advantage and were largely worn. Taffeta, stiffened organza, net and the softer chiffons and georgette materials, displayed the lovely colour range available this year. Blue in all tonings, from soft pastels to the new pieasso colour were featured, cyclamen, parma and dahlia and pinks were the choice of many youthful wearers. The vogue for charming and unusual hair ornaments showed clusters of dainty artificial flowers, tiny curled ostrich plumes and sequinned ornaments and the revival of velvet neck bands gave a demure edwardian look to their sponsors. Water may be softened by boiling it, or by soaking lemon or orange peel in it overnight. It gives it the quality of soft rainwater, and makes it soothing to the skin.
