COURSE RECORDS BROKEN

Rabble Wins Timaru Cup NIGHTCALM DEADHEATS WITH PETERSHAM Dominion Special Service. TIMARU, April 27. Winning the Timaru Cup in 2.3 3-5, Rabble established a course record at the first day of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting today. The record was previously held by Tarleton in 2.4 4-5, and was made 14 years ago. In the last race Nightcalm and Petersham dead-heated, and broke Cranford’s course record by l-ssec. , . , The meeting was held in bright sunshine. The track was hard, and there was a moderate attendance. The totalizator handled £10,826/10/-, against £10,430/10/-, an increase of £396. Jewish Lad Narrowly. Jewish Lad was sent out a good favourite for the Otaio Hurdles, and led practically from the barrier rise. He was accompanied over the first two hurdles by Dracula, but drew away from him, and with half the jouney covered had a six lengths’ lead from Dracula, with a bigger break to Mount Vai and The Surgeon. Dracula closed up on the leader rounding the home turn, and was only two lengths from him at the last fence. Jewish Lad had not been seriously called on up to this stage, but had to be ridden right out to hold off a determined effort by Dracula, who would have reversed the places in another stride or two. Mount Vai was a poor third, a long way in front of The Surgeon. Bastille crashed at the second fence. Won'All The Way. Phenomenal, trained by M. B. Edwards, won the Electric Stakes from enU to end. , ' ■ix u He was followed into the straight by Pink Dress and Don Roy, with Pink Bird and Asia bandy. Asia made a bold attempt to get up, and was overhauling the leader at every stride, but _ Phenomenal was aJble to hold on to gain a narrow verdict. King Gustavo, who was slow away, finished strongly in third place,’ three lengths in front of Pink Dress. Decisive Win. •Imperial Jade, bracketed with David Denby and Mack Scot in the M ashdyke Trot' endeavoured to lead the field throughout but, after piloting Manpower, Scenic Gem, Mack Scot, Durability and Diviner into the straight, weakened badly and finished sixth. Manpower took charge a furlong from home and carried on for a decisive win from Durability, who as easily outstayed Mack Scot, Erin’s Lad and Scenic Gem. • Rabble’s Cup. The Timaru Cup drew a high-class field and speculation was widely distributed. Spartan and The Sandwich Man were the early leaders, with Milford and Parquet occupying rear positions. Spartan and The Sandwich Man led into the straight from Foxlove, Swordstick, Golden Chest, Dictate, Rabble and Night Hawk, with Settlement and Queen of Song next. The two leaders did not last long in the run home and Rabble quickly shot to the front from Dictate, Foxlove and Settlement, and, without being challenged, won without any pressure from Dictate, who thus added to his consistent record of minor placings in important events. Settlement finished solidly to cut Foxlove out of third money on the post. Queen of Song was close up next in front of Sword-stick and Mungatoon. One of the last to finish was Golden Chest, who broke down badly when occupying a prominent position a furlong fronj home. Favourites In Places. Investors correctly summed up the field for the Tycho Hack Handicap, the three best supported filling the places. ‘•Rex Maitland and On Call carried on as pacemakers from the early stages and turned for home in front of Flagman, Violenta, Crack o’ Dawn, and Rebellion. On Call weakened iu the run home and Rex ‘ Maitland was headed by Flagman 100 yards from the post. The last-named appeared to be in for a decisive win, but was tiring just on the post and managed to get home only by a short head from Rebellion, who came with a brilliant late run to beat Rex Maitland by a similar margin. Outsider Scores. The surprise of the day was provided by the Kcyrytown Hack Handicap, one of the outsiders, Sir Hugh, scoring a narrow win and paying a big dividend. The early leaders were Twenty Grand and Lord Puck, and at the end of two furlongs Lord Puck opened up a big break to Screamer, Twenty Grand, Auctor and Sir Hugh. Screamer had taken charge when the straight was reached, with Auctor, Master Dingle and Sir Hugh showing up. Screamer and Auctor were engaged in a stirring struggle with Screamer doing the better, when Sir Hugh flashed up on the outside of them and, in an exciting finish, a head verdict went to Sir Hugh from Screamer, who beat Auctor by a like margin. Elegy was next. Ochiltree Easily. Equerry went to the front early in the Hadlow Trot from Ochiltree, and this pair entered the straight together in front of Busted Flush, Pursuit and Dusky Sound. Ochiltree soon drew to the front in the run home and was not troubled to win from Pursuit, with Dusky Sound a close 'third in front of Busted Flush and Equerry. The favourite, Stormtost, broke up in the first furlong and was always in a rear position. Close Finish. Tn a programme of close finishes, tire most exciting was reserved for the concluding event, the Flying Handicap, for which Density and Nightcalm closely disputed favouritism. Nightcalm and Valantua were smartest to begin, but at the end of two furlongs Density had raced past them and she. was first to enter the run home from Nightcalm, Valantua and Petersham. Nightcalm quickly tackled the leader and actually headed her 50 yards from the line, and his victory seemed assured, but Petersham, responding to vigorous riding, joined in nearing the post, and the trio crossed the line in a bunch, the judge being unable to separate Nightcalm and Petersham, with Density a head away. Valantua was two lengths back, three lengths in front of Lazybones. Details Of The Racing By Telegraph—Press Association. OTAIO HURDLES HANDICAP, of £l4O.
