“THE WOMEN”
Crisp And Biting Dialogue Probably no play in recent years has provoked more interest and controversy than’ Clare Boothe's satire, “The AVomen.” which will begin its AA’ellington season in the Grand Opera House next Saturday night, under t.he direction of J. C. Williamson Theatres Ltd. ‘The AVomen" ran for more than 800 performances on Broadway, New York, and enjoyed remarkably successful seasons everywhere in Australia, and in Auckland, where, recently, it played for more than two weeks. It has a brilliant cast of 40 women, headed by the distinguished American actress, Irene Purcell. Also in t.he cast is Mary Decs, famous as the “double" for the late Jean Harlow. The dialogue is crisp and biting. The story tells of 'now the idle and malicious gossip of a group of society women, with more money than good taste, drives the only sympathetic character in the play into the divorce court, whence she is rescued only by the wit and wisdom of her mother.
Laurence Hunter, carpenter and joiner, aged 32, was remanded for one week when lie appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrates' Court, AA'ellington. charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Thorndon Quay on April 23.
