PAINTING BANNED

Heads Of Dictators On Scales Of Justice LONDON, April 17. The Royal Society of British Artists has banned a canvas by Mr. Otway McCannell, principal of the Farnham Art School, showing the devil weighing the heads of Herr Hitler and Signor Mussolini on the scales of justice before a shocked audience which includes the Pope, Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Roosevelt. The society requested the withdrawal of the picture because “it might be misunderstood in the present state of European affairs.” Mr. McCannell, R.8.A., A.R.W.A., was educated at Nelson College, and is a well-known figure and portrait painter. In 1924 he exhibited at the Academy “The Devil’s Chessboard,’’ which caused much controversy.
