Clare Boothe’s Stage Comedy Clare Boothe’s famous stage comedy. ‘'The Women.” described as the most controversial play of the day. will begin a season in the New Opera House, Wellington, on Saturday, April 29. The distinguished American actress, Irene Purcell, who plays the role of Alary Haines in this provocative play, has appeared in several Hollywood film productions in addition to many notable plays. In ‘'The Women.” she has the one sympathetic role in the piece. Mary Dees, who appears with Miss Purcell, has been seen on the screen in numerous productions, and she impersonated the late Jean Harlow in the film ‘‘Saratoga” in the scenes which this actress had left unfinished when she died. The Wellington provincial lour includes presentations of “The Women” in the Opera House, New Plymouth, on Monday, /April 24; in the Majestic Theatre. Wanganui, on Wednesday, April 26; and in the Opera House, Palmerston North, on Thursday and Friday, April 27 and 28, a matinee being presented on Friday afternoon.
