DE VALERA’S PLEA FOR PEACE
Desire Of Hundreds Of Millions WORLD CONFERENCE URGED Eire’s Policy Of Neutrality Through Strength B,y Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. LONDON, April 16. Mr. de Valera, Prime Minister of Eire, in a public speech at Clare yesterday, said it would appear that only the mercy of Providence could save Europe from a new war more terrible and more disastrous than that of 1914.
He asked whether it was too late for the hundreds of millions of people who wanted peace to demand ,a conference of the Powers before, instead of after, war. V(as it possible that Mr. Roosevelt’s request would be. refused? He added that a settlement after a war would be short-lived, and those who were defeated would grimly bide their time to exact a harsh and iniquitous revenge. The Eire Government’s policy was that neutrality could be attained only through strength. It was necessary to prepare defences to the limit of the country’s resources. He appealed for national unity and more volunteers.
