JAYOLA SCORES AT AVONDALE

Leads Almost All The Way KATHBELLA AND IVAR OTHER WINNERS Dominion Special Service, AUCKLAND, April 17. The Avondale Jockey Club's autumn meeting concluded today in fine weather. The track was fast, there was a large attendance and the totalizator handled £35,173, compared with £30,791/10/- last year, an increase of £4381/10/-.The total for the meeting was £82,245, against £65,255, an increase of £16,990. The consistent -three-year-old Jayola registered hie best performance to date when he won the Autumn Handicap almost from end to end. Jayola came into the straight several lengths clear and he held on just long enough to beat the fastfinishing Golden Sheila, who came from sixth at the turn. Golden Sheila’s finishing effort was really good and Gold Vaals, who followed her up the straight, also came home well for third after being a very long way back. Rulette ran another honest race for fourth but she was troubled by the last furlong. Master Briefly came right from the rear for fifth. Poland tired quickly after attempting to go with Jayola in the middle stages and Cheval de Volee lost a little ground in the straight, after being fifth at the turn. Coronation ran ungenerously and was never dangerous. The win favourite, Kathbella, prevailed in the Mt. Eden Handicap after an exciting race over the last furlong. Kathbella followed Valimeen in the running and just outstayed her in the last 50 yards.. The winner was ridden by the apprentice J. Campbell and claimed a 71b. allowance. Valimeen ran her best race for. a long time and it was only in the last little bit that she surrendered the lead. Gay Seton, after jumping out very smartly, drifted back several lengths and then came with a determined run ou the rails to be a close third. Pirate King made a very creditable showing for fourth and Orwere, after being third at the turn, weakened into fifth position. Erndale was never dangerous.

Well ridden by W. J. Broughton, the three-year-old Ivar scored narrowly in an exciting finish with Inver and Jack Tar in the Morningside Handicap. Ivar saddled up well after his second on the first day and he justified his favouritism by fighting on very strongly when the pressure was applied in the last furlong. Inver was never far away from the, leaders and he displayed more determination than in some of his recent racing by holding on grimly for second. Jack Tar, after receiving checks in the early stages, secured a good run on the rails in the straight and ran ou solidly to be a very close third. Details Of The Racing HOBSON VILLE HURDLES, of £250.
