Road Accidents

Sir, —Hon. R. Semple is to be commended for his efforts ’to reduce the number of motor-car accidents, but I am afraid his endeavours will not meet with the success they deserve till a maximum speed is fixed and severe penalties inflicted on those who exceed the limit. A mere fine of 30/- or so will never have the effect of eliminating speeding. When one travels over our roads one marvels not at the number of accidents but that there are not very many more, because of the excessive speed of many motorists. Undoubtedly speed and alcohol are the main factors in the majority of accidents. —I am, etc., SAFETY. Upper Hutt, April 15.
