NEW DRIVERS

Proposal To Issue L Plates

Deferred

Because of divided opinion among local authorities on the question the New Zealand Road Safety Council decided yesterday to hold over a proposal for a scheme whereby L plates should be issued to new drivers.

A report submitted to the meeting stated that the Minister of Transport had instructed that as a first step the proposals should be referred to local bodies and other interested parties for their comments. Replies from the majority of the local authorities indicated'that whereas 84 local authorities wore favourable to the scheme. 83 were unfavourable, the remainder having either not replied or made no comments either for or against: also, the North Island Jlotor Union and the South Island Jlotor Union had both announced that they were not favourably disposed to the proposals.
