Fiftieth Anniversary Of Orakau Fight From “The Dominion,” April 2, IM4. Fifty years ago today a fierce tight was proceeding at Orakau, some 25 miles from Hamilton, where the defence put up by the Maoris was equal to anything in tlie history of the world. To perpetuate the memory of the heroes of the light, (he Government erected a monument on the site of the pa, and this was unveiled yesterday by the Minister of Defence (the ilon.’J. Allen) in the presence of several thousand Europeans and Natives, General Goilley anil staff, the Hon. W. 11. llerries, the I lon. Dr. Poniare, Bishop Averill, live members of Parliament, and two member* of the Upper House. The new Salvation Army Maternity Hospital in Kensington Street, Wellington, was opened yesterday afternoon by the mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, in the presence of a large gathering of Salvationists and others. Commissioner Richards presided, and among those present were the Hon. C. M. Luke, the Hon. C. 11. Mills, Dr. A. V. Newman, Mr. R. A. Wright, Mr. D. McLaren,' Lady Stout, and Dr Platte-Mills.
