COACHING IN SCHOOLS

University Scholarship

By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, March 20. A statement that in the bigger city schools the brightest entrants were formed into special classes and coached for university scholarships from the day they entered the school was made by the rector of the Gore High School, Mr. E. H. W. Rountree, yesterday. “There are still sdme people who are inclined-to judge a school by its examination results,” be said. “How many of the great private schools both in England and New Zealand, with all their advantages, attempt to justify their existence by examination results? A study of the lists will reveal that with ivery rare exceptions all the leading candidates for university scholarships are from the bigger city schools. “These schools have a large new entry each year and from this entry it is possible to choose 25 of the brightest entrants. They become a sjieeial class coached from the day they enter the school with the one object in view of obtaining a university scholarship.”
