COST OF COUNTRY TELEPHONES
Farmers’ Union Protest Dominion Special Service MASTERTON, March 20. Unless relief was forthcoming they would be forced to cut out their telephones, said some speakers at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, when the action of the P. and T. Department in removing concessions granted in 1931 to country telephone users and making further rental increases was criticised. Mr. J. Andrew said that in his district the annual cost of a telephone had risen from £lO/18/- to £lB/13/4. Last’ year he had paid £l5/17/6 and this year he was expected to pay £27/10/-. A motion was passed protesting strongly against the removal of concessions and the increased costs of rural telephones. A committee was set up to deal with the subject locally, and it will be referred to Farmers’ Union headquarters for national action.
