PERIOD GARMENTS WANTED

Centennial Pageantry

recreating atmosphere OF BYGONE DAYS

A request to people possessing early Victorian garments that might be of service to organizers of Centennial pageantry to lend them for the purpose is contained in the latest number of the “Centennial News,” issued by the Department of Internal Affairs. It is stated that costume will play an important part in the Centennial pageantry that will form a feature of celebrations in so many places next year. Where the pageantry is of historic character it is essential that clothes of actors should be correct. If actual costumes worn in bygone days can be used the interest wilt be increased and the artistic effect heightened. New clothes never carry quite the same conviction as old ones. In many New Zealand homes there must be, folded away in boxes, perhaps, old clothes which would be invaluable at this time. Already requests for uniforms, naval and military, from 1840 onwards are reaching Centennial headquarters, and inquiries are frequently received for the crinolines and bustles that the grandmothers and great-grandmothers of the present generation wore with such grace. Citizens who can give or lend such costumes for Centennial pageants in their districts, or for national pageants, are asked to communicate with the National Director of Pageantry, Internal Affairs Department, Wellington. A description of articles of attire available will be appreciated. The period.it is desired to cover is, roughly, from 1840 to 1900, and, of course, clothes for men, women, and children will be welcomed. Boots and shoos, sunshades, and other accessories are difficult to obtain and should not be overlooked. Vehicles Also Wanted. Information with regard to the whereabouts of old vehicles is also desired. Some of the pageants will need old coaches, drags, four-wheelers, han-som-cabs, and such conveyances to embellish their processions and complete the atmosphere of earlier days.
