"HEARING DAY" EVENTS

Morning Tea and Picnic Conclude Efforts

Presidents of women's associations in Wellington were entertained at morning tea at James Smith’s tearoom on Friday by the League for the Hard of Hearing as a final gesture toward the league's "hearing day.” Mrs. J. F. Nicholson ami Miss Harty received the guests and at the conclusion of morning tea they were taken to the league's rooms, where Dr. G. \V. Harty, immediate past president, welcomed the visitors and gave an interesting talk in which he reviewed activities of the league during the past four years. The use of the audiometer was demonstrated on one of the visitors by Miss M. Eggleston, toutor to the Wellington branch, who gave a demonstration of lip reading. Mrs. Hurd-Wood gave a talk on the group-hearing aid of the audiometer.

During the sessions attention was drawn to the fact that, the League for the Hard of Hearing did not diagnose or treat cases of deafness and prospective student members were advised to consult qualified ear specialists to ensure that all possible was being done for the conservation of hearing. At these sessions student members, though not all expert lip readers, dispensed tea and moved among the guests to give visitors an opportunity to test their ability to lip read natural speech. Picnic in Country.

As a ‘Tounding-off” to “hearing day.” students and friends were entertained at a delightful picnic in Belmont on Saturday. Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Gibbs's country home was the scene of the outing, where perfect summer weather prevailed. In this ideal spot, surrounded by native bush, outdoor badminton was played, and in the swimming pool, with its surroundings of hydrangeas in full bloom, many enjoyed a swim. Before leaving, Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs were thanked for their hospitality and for the ample opportunities afforded for the visitors’ entertainment.
