NEW ZEALAND MONEY

Difficulty In Changing It Outside Country TOURIST’S COMMENTS “My bank manager instructed me on no account to bring New Zealand money back to Victoria,” said Mr. J. A. Kelly, an Australian passenger in the Strathallan, yesterday. “‘We won’t accept it,’ he told me. ‘Don’t come back even with five shillings, or it will be your own lookout.’ ” None of the passengers, he said, had been able to change New Zealand currency in the Strathallan, but the reason might be that it was the company’s last cruise of the season to New Zealand. They had had no difficulty at all in changing Australian notes in New Zealand.

Mr. Kelly said he had met a business woman in Auckland who had complained to him that the amount she was allowed to take with her on a visit to the United States was quite inadequate. “It reminded me of the case of some friends of mine in the German cruise ship Reliance,” said 'Mr. Kelly. “They were all very wealthy; in fact, one was ;i millionaire. Well, they were allowed to take only so much money with them when they left Germany. AVlicn they arrived at Melbourne they they had practically nothing left and had to borrow wherever they could. The millionaire was ‘broke.’ “It seems to some of us in Australia that New Zealand is doing much the same thing as Germany, and sometimes we wonder where it is all going to end.”

During the fortnight he and his companions had been on the cruise they had spent about £5O each. If they had been restricted as New Zealanders travelling abroad were restricted, thwy probably would have decided against making the cruise. “AVe’re just going off now to spend all the New Zealand currency we have,” added Mr. Kelly. “AVe want some souvenirs of New Zealand to lake back with, us, and they won’t be New Zealand money.”
