CURBING TERRORISM IN SHANGHAI
Drive By Combined Forces In “Bad Lands” SHANGHAI, February 22. In an effort, to seize the perpetrators of Hie recent shootings, a force of 800, including 100 men of tbe East Surrey Keigimenl, 100 Japanese, 100 Russians, and 1 a detachment of Italian marines, participated in a clean-up drive of the so-called "bad lands” outside tiie western district of the International Settlement today. Two hundred suspects were arrested ami released after being questioned. The commanders of the local Japanese military and naval forces called on the chairman of the municipal council anil requested its assent to measures to cope with terrorism. Later they called on the commanders of tbe British and Italian forces, and reported their action. The Tokio newspaper ."Asahi Sliimbini,” states that Japan demands tbe prompt arrest of terrorists and increased representation on the municipal council, also fundamental reorgauization in the International Settlement, in order "to facilitate tiie maintenance of law and order.” It adds that Japan will take independent action if Hie demands are rejected.
