MERCANTILE CRICKET

j Meeting Of Management Committee WET WEATHER RULING The management committee of the M ellington Mercantile Cricket League decided last night to declare the game between Amalgamated Bricks and Jaseo in the A grade (won by the former) a draw. In this match play was extended beyond the official elosing time (6.15 p.m.). the umpire ruling that extra time could be played by the side hatting last because ot time being lost by both sides through rain. As a result Amalgamated Bricks forced a win. It was made clear that the umpires ruling was erroneous. The bylaw stated that the side batting first was allowed to bat for two hours and a quarter, and that play finished at 6.1, * p.m. unless one side wu« late in starting, the other team then having the right of claiming extra time. Undjr this ruling, the first, batting side, but not the second, could claim extra time if rain interfered with play. Opinions were expressed that there was a weakness in the bylaw, but that it had to stand till altered. Mr. D. Calcinni advised that the umpires’ association had given a ruling. It was agreed that the ruling was strictly in accordance with the. bylaw. Somewhat similar circumstances having prevailed in the Atlantic Union-Pas-times C grade match, won by the former by two runs after extra time had been played, it was decided to declare (he match a draw. The registration of a B grade player having been questioned, it was decided to ask the captains of the teams involved and the player to attend next week’s meeting of the management committee. It was decdied to advise Thompson Bros, that it was automatically disqualified, having defaulted three games. The Wairarapa Cricket Association notified its acceptance of a match with the Mercantile League on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. It was decided to postpone all fixtures on March 11. the date of the Test match against Sir Julien Cahn's team. There were present Messrs. J. J. Furlong (chairman). L. E. Downes, S. W. Martin. J.
