ELECTION OF NEW POPE Cardinal Massimi Seen As Likely Candidate GREAT ACTIVITY AT THE VATICAN (Independent Cable Service.) (Received February 23, 1.30 a.m.) VATICAN CITY, February 23. The cardinals assembled for the conclave for the election of a Pope exchanged visits and conferred all day long before the actual conclave starts. A survey of the visits showed that Cardinal Massimo Massimi, a legal expert, orator and author, had the largest number —seventeen. Cardinal Massimi has not previously appeared among the leading candidates for the papacy, but the number of his supporters is believed substantially to exceed yesterday’s callers who are known to favour his election.
