ATHLETICS TALENT

Next Saturday’s Meeting In Wellington “The Wellington provincial championship meeting, which is to 'be staged at the Basin Reserve on Saturday next, should prove one of the best, it not the best, gatherings ever staged by the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, the chairman of the centre, Mr. A. C. Kitto, yesterday. “Not since 1932 have we had such talent, as there is available here today,” he proceeded. “Take a case in point—the quarter-niilc. We have G. Quinn, J. Evans (the rising star), C. Robinson, J. M. Watt, and J. Eastwood, any one of whom can break 51sec. The majority of these runners will also appear in the sprints. “For the mile and three miles, we will have W. Pullar, who will be running for Wairarapa, and. whose class will be much above the other competitors. “In the field events, aud specially in the high jump, we have two men, Phillipps and Hunter, both of whom can clear 6ft. Hunter cleared 6ft. at the meeting on the Hutt Recreation Ground on Monday night. “For the first time in the history of the centre, we will be staging a full programme of junior and women’s events, taking in all field events. From the form shown by the juniors aud women will be selected the team to represent Wellington at the national junior and women’s championships in Auckland on March 25. Mr. Kitto said the pick of the secondary school boys would be taking part in the junior competitions on Saturday. On the form shown by the men will be selected the team to represent Wellington at the New Zealand championship meeting in Napier on Marell 10 and 11. There will be a grand parade of athletes for the Kitto Shield, and in order to give the public an opportunity of witnessing this spectacular event, it appears on the programme at 3 p.m. The leading cyclists, including R. Ulmer, J. Wilson, and «‘A. Pennington, who did so well at the New Zealand cycling championships in Dunedin last Saturday, will also be competing.
