INCREASED STAKES

Easter At Addington Subject to the approval of the New Zealand Trotting Association, the Metropolitan Trotting Club will offer £10,550 in stakes for the three days’ racing, representing an increase of £1550 on the 1937 programme. Though the increase is substantial, many alterations have been made, and the principal event will be the fourth, not the third, race. The club has struck out boldly in an attempt to make the racing us attractive as possible, and has imposed conditions that will ensure races being truly run. On the first two days of the meeting the principal event will be for horses assessed at 4.25 or better, ami there will also be two-mile races for horses assessed at from 4.29 to 4.20. ami from 4.33 to 4.30. The big race will be worth £lOOO, provided the time registered is faster than than recorded in other pacers' events ou the day. If the 4.20 or 4.30 pacers register faster time than the’champions, then £250 will be deleted from the prize in the big race and added to the event in which the fastest time is done. The idea is a new one and has much fo recommend it. It should ensure a true test of speed and stamina.

The big event on the concluding day will be a Free-for-All over a mile and a quarter, and the club reserves" the right to refuse the nomination or acceptance of any horse which, in its opinion, does uot measure up to the required standard of merit. The prize will be £750. Only one mile race will be run during the three days, aud this will be a mile in saddle, the last , event of the meeting. No race on the programme will be worth less than £3OO.
