Relieving Teachers
Sir, —At the beginning of each year a certain number of relieving teachers are appointed to the staffs of primary schools, and I would like to draw the attention of the Government to a phase of its recent legislation, which, in the opinion, of many, requires amendment. . The new legislation provides for the appointment of relieving general teachers, irrespective of whether they are married or single, and in the case Of married women, irrespective of the earnings or salaries of their husbands. There are cases of the wives of senior male teachers being appointed as relieving teachers, while others in much poorer circumstances have’ been without employment.. There are other cases of the wives of civil senvants being appointed ■whose husbands are in receipt of good salaries and well able to maintain them. This is a matter that should be inquired into, and for this reason I trespass on vour space.——l am, etc., on you sp INTERESTED. Wellington, January 30.
