NEW APPEARANCE
Old Railway Building
DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS The effect of the remodelling of the old Railways Department building in Featherston Street, Wellington, is already apparent, though the scaffolding will remain up for a few weeks yet. Much ornamental stonework has been removed from the front of the building, which to the left of the main entrance is ready for the cream-coloured plastering. Work on the entrance involved the removal of the bay window which formerly ran from top to bottom. The roof parapet has been lowered and many tons of coping and canopies trimmed off. The central fleche which rose 36 feet above the level of the roof has gone, and the three gables have been cut down to the roof level. Diagonal steel trusses and partitions have strengthened the main structure, the interior of which has been renovated and the office accommodation remodelled. The building will probably be known as the Defence Services Building. Army and Navy Headquarters are already in occupation, and Air Force Headquarters will move in on February 1.
