AUSTRALIAN COMPANIES Increased Profits Last Year A statement received by the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand says the profits announced in Australia for 1938 by 504 companies engaged in all industries with the exception of mining aggregated £24.712.100, compared with £23,188,047 in 1937. Though total profits increased by £1,524,053 fewer companies reported higher earnings compared with 1937. Higher profits were recorded by about 70 per cent, of the companies ai against 80 per cent, in 1937. The year’s aggregate result, taking into account the disturbed European affairs, drought. lower export prices, and rising costs, must be regarded as most satisfactory and reflects the growing efficiency in Australian works and also the expansion of industry. The principal sufferers were the pastoral companies because of the lower wool prices and the reduced clip. None of these recorded increased profits. The following list compares the principal profit-earners in 1938 with 1937 :— 1937. 19.38.
