HAWKE’S BAY RAM FAIR

Prices Disappointing Bv 'JL'elejrrapii —utphs Association HASTINGS, January 26. At the*opening of tlie Hawkes Bay ram fair held at Tomoana Showgrounds today, the quality of the yarding was well up to the usual standard, but prices were disappointing. There were numerous passings, competition was erratic, and ibidding at times painfully slow. Tlie majority of pens was sold out at about the starting price nt last year’s fair. Hardy, well-boned, medium to strongwoolled type of Romneys attracted most attention and averaged five to six guineas. Fine and light wool types averaged to four and a half guineas. Top price of 19 guineas was paid for an excellent pen of five one-shear Romney rams. The npxt best price, 17. t guineas, was for a line of live one-shear rams. The day was occupied in selling Lincoln flock rams and Romney flock rams. The top price for the former was nine guineas. The majority of Lincolns, was passed in at prices ranging to 6-J guineas. Nearly all the well-known breeders of the North Island were represented, and two lines originated from the South Island. Low-grade pens were hard to trade, and many failed to pass an opening bid of two guineas.
