WATER-MAIN BURSTS
Spectacular Display On Pipe Bridge A spectacular, geyser-like display was seen by people in the vicinity of the Hutt River pipe bridge yesterday morning when one of the mains carrying the city’s water supply burst along tlie seams. Tlie spray, driven back across the bridge by the wind, drenched cyclists and inconvenienced motorists. The failure of the pipe is considered to have resulted from the vibration caused by traffic moving across the bridge at excessive speed. Warnings of tlie danger of the heavy vibration to which the bridge is subjected have been given repeatedly by the Wellington city engineer. The failure of the main was tlie second since it was reconditioned hist year. Tlie original bridge was built solely to carry the pipes across the river, having no carriage way. When it was rebuilt for the use of horse-drawn traffic a sliced limit of 12 miles an hour wa.s fixed, but with the advent >f motor-cars this was disregarded Recently a speed limit of 15 miles an hour was agreed upon, but. this has been disregarded likewise.
