Too Much Sulphur Dioxide In Mincemeat “MUMMIFIED FOOD” By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, January 25. Four butchers were each fined 10/by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., today, on charges of selling mincemeat which contained more than the permissible amount of sulphur dioxide —3,5 grains to the pound. Mr. T. Pargeter, of the Health Department, said that, a report to the department from Johannesburg drawing attention to the detrimental effect to digestion of a surplus of sulphur dioxide in meat led to investigations round Christchurch. ■ Out of 44 tests 11 failed to comply' with the regulation.
“The department looks upon it as a serious affair that we should have lo consume all this mummified food," he said.
