Supreme Court Changes
From “The Dominion,” January 29, 1914.
In the Dunedin Garrison Hall on Tuesday night a citizens’ meeting was held to say farewell to the Right Hon. Sir Joshua Williams, P.C., on the occasion of ins retirement from the New Zealand Bench and departure for England to take his seat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of the Empire. The large hall was overcrowded, among those present being the mayor of Dunedin (Mr. W. D. Stewart), the Hon. J. Alien, the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Sir Robert Stout, Mr. Justice Sim, and many leading citizens representing the business, legal, clerical, and other sections of the community.
The Attorney-General (Hon. A. L. Herdman) made the following statement in connection with the judiciary to a “Dominion" reporter yesterday: “The resignation of Sir Joshua Williams will take effect from January 31, Mr. Justice Sim will relinquish the office of president ot the Arbitration Court, and will in future perform judicial duties only. Mr. Hosliing, K.C., of Dunedin, has been offered and has accepted the seat upon the Supreme Court Bench, which will have to be filled when the Judicature Amendment Act. passed last session, comes into force on February 1 next. Who will be the new president of the Arbitration Court has not yet been settled. On this point I shall probably be able to make a statement before the end of the present week.” \
