POLICE CONSTABLE ASSAULTED
Nose Broken By Man Who Resisted Arrest WELDER SENT TO JAIL FOR A MONTH When requested by-a police constable in Courtenay Place to move <m Douglas Haig Snowball, welder, agcu -1, struck the constable in the face and broke his nose. He then resisted arrest. He appeared in the Magistrates’ Court, M ellington, yesterday and was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M. Snowball pleaded guilty to assaulting Constable E. J. White while in the execution of his duty and also admitted resisting arrest. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of using obscene language. Accused was under the influence ox liquor in Courtenay Place on January 14, said Constable White in evidence. When asked to move on he wouid not do so and became abusive. “He nit me on the face unexpectedly,” said witness, whose nose was broken. “I got hold of him then and he struggled. A large crowd gathered, but I finallj’ got him into a taxi and took him to the police station.” , In reply to a question,by SeniorSergeant D. O’Neill, who prosecuted, witness said he told accused that if he did not go away he would have to lock him up. Snowball then used bad language and struck witness. To the magistrate: Accused was well intoxicated, but capable of going home by himself. “You are a young man aud you have been before the court before in connexion with liquor offences, ’ said the magistrate to Snowball. “You have got to learn to restrain yourself.” Snowball was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for assaulting' the constable and was convicted and discharged on the other charges.
