FIVE YEARS WITHOUT SLEEP

A 69-year-old odd-jou man. Isaac Wilbur, Orleans. The nights are pretty long, and I guess it's my own Jiiuit. “I close my eyes just to rest them, but 1 never really sleep.”

■When he was a youth lie found he could work day and night for three months with only one hour’s sleep in 24. In 1928 he read in a magazine (hat .nobody could go 80 days without sleep. That struck him as ridiculous, and to prove it he went sleepless for 83 days and nights. The following year he bettered his own record, staying awake 147 days. And in 1934 lie completed his first year without sleep.
