THEFT OF CLOTHING
Seaman For Sentence Pleading guilty in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, to the theft of clothitig, valued at £42/9/6, the property of Trevor Lane, and a wristlet watch valued at £5, also the property of Trevor Lane, Edward John Terry Andrews, seaman, aged 25, was remanded by Mr. J. H, Luxford, SjM., to ajxpear in Wellington again today for sentence. In the meantime the probation officer is to supply a report. In a statement to the police accused said he met a stranger one afternoon who said he would get him £2 the next day. Accused was unemployed at the time. He was not aware of the stranger’s name, but knew him as “Ginger.” He accordingly met “Ginger” the next day, and was taken in a taxi to a house in Boulcott Street. Accused waited in the taxi while “Ginger” entered the house, to reappear presently with a suitease and a parcel. The taxi then took them to Courtenay Place. “Ginger” told him to look after the property, and said he would give him £2 the following day. Accused did not meet him as arranged, and pawned l a pair of slices for 10/-. When accosted by the police ie directed them to where the property could ‘be recovered. He dicj, not know “Ginger,” and could give no information as to where he was to be found. “Accused was quite frank, and gave the police every assistance,” said a detective. “It was through him that the property was recovered.” Evidence showed that accused -bought the watch for 5/- from a man ho did not know. The purchase was made in an hotel bar.
