DOMINION SCENERY
“Truly Magnificent,” Says Lord Strabolgi NEED FOR MORE PEOPLE By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYMOUTH, January 22. “I am much impressed with your truly magnificent scenery,” said Lord Strabolgi, when passing through Greymouth on Saturday afternoon after visiting the South Westland glaciers. “I was able to get glimpses of your fine forest’and I am impressed with the wonderful work done in the last 100 years in clearing the bush and building roads and railways, specially with the small population you have, and the fact that no native labour was available as in South Africa. “Your country wants a much bigger population, and if that is realized you should make even greater progress. However, it is the business of the people of New Zealand themselves, and I do not attempt to make any suggestion as to how an increase should be made.’’
Asked what he thought of the suggestion that immigrants should be at traded from northern Europe, Lord Strabolgi said that again was a matter for the people of New Zealand, ami he would not like to give an opinion. However, many Scandinavians who had settled in Canada had made good there.
Lord Strabolgi declined to comment on the political situation in New Zealand, remarking: “I am a visitor to this country and it is not for me to, say anything about the political outlook of the Dominion. However. I want to say I have enjoyed my visit to New Zealand immensely, and everywhere have met with the greatest kindness.”
