THAMES RACES

Goldfields Cup To Black Musk SENSATION IN HURDLE EVENT Dominion Special Service. THAMES, January 21. The Thames Jockey Club's annual meeting opened today in fine weather, lheie was a record attendance. The track was in excellent order. The tota l*zator handled £27,006, an increase of £3863 compared with the corresponding day last After lying in behind the leaders till well into the straight. Town Section came home attractively over the last furlong to win the Trial Handicap very comfortably from Orally. It was an improved showing on her past form and Town Section may now go on with it. Orally displayed plenty of speed by leading into the straight but was stopping a little at the finish. She is a likely improver. After being handy throughout. Games showed his best form to date bv finishing third but he had every cbanc . Empire Action shaped promisingly to j,ct fourth and may be " n P rO Y ? was race The favourite, Pocket Venus, was in the middle of the field early and did not get clear. After be ng a good way back. Kotahi Acre finished well in the straight and would have been cl °“ r . a better run. Cmtrace and aal t Jar' ar ” t Lila were prominent, soon after‘ the eta but they failed to run on. Queer Spear and Royal Fawkes were badly lelt the start.

Surprise for Punters.

A. dividend of over a quarter of a cen turn- on the win machine was returned by Oiieen Lu in the Maramarua Hurdles. Sim was always handily placed and jump hi-well throughout, went to the front soon after straightening up to win decis ively After delaying the etart Airam was lefHully six le«Bths behind, but she mate, un her ground quickly and was near the leaders. Though she fought on -amely at the finish her early effort told” Sinking Fund finished well and it wY /easily his best effort to date. Kittle, who finished fourth ran a cred-table race after not getting too good a P ass «’" over the concluding stages. Ca ;S utta L till the straight and then retired He is likely to improve. Ngakaru caused a sensation when being well out in front mssinc the stand, he ran off at the sec ond hurdle in the etraight and jumped the outside fence into the birdcage. Strath ire fell at the third fence His rider, J. •Day received a broken collarbone.

Thrilling Finish.

The Flying Handicap resulted in a thrilling finish, heads separating the placed horses. After taking charge a furion- from the post, the consistent Mon Acre fought off challenges by Rulette and Tooley Street, to gain the decision Ihe unlucky runner, was Toolej Stieet, wh > after being in the rear over 'thei early stages, made a fast move on the outside three furlongs from home, but was pushed out rounding the turn and lost considerable ground. He finished brilliantly wide out and in another few strides would have been the winner. Rulette came home strongly, as also did Gay Seton, van mcen went fast early, hut stopped quickly in the straight. The favourite, Llangollen was finishing on after being forced to cover extra ground.

Aynho’s First Success.

Though ehc was slow- away aud neared iu a hopeless position half a mile from hime, Aynho overwhelmed the opposition in the straight and wotl the Hack Cup going away. It was Aynhos firs? success, and she paid just over a score ou the wm machine. Alastei AP pellant. who was always in third or fourth place during the running performei l creditablv, and Mio Fratollo, who was tie pacemaker, nuiyed on better than usual to get third. Royal Abb was not prominent early, but finished fairly well for fourth Eastern He‘ r u a PP ea l r o e(l Ff, when he moved up to the leaders o- the turn, ibut failed to go on with it. Lonstar lost ground at the start, and of the others, Gay Sister, Long Span and Raceline did best.

Black Musk All The Way.

Setting a fast pace which had most of the field in trouble, Black Musk led ah the wav to score a decisive win in ths Goldfields Cup and pay just figures on the wm machine. After m v in- un to be in close attendance to the Rader over the last half-mile, Te Hat stayed on solidly to stall off a strong chai len-e from King Theo, who was in the rear for a greater part of the journey The favourite Hot Box made a promising move three furlongs from home, but failed to sustain his effort, and was beaten soon after entering the st y ig *1' fo Y.® tll y Glad did best of the others to get fouith, but he had every chance ? laut failed to stay and Day Mind and Gleu Abb were well beaten.

Win for Maxam.

Beginning brilliantly, l.he second favourile, Maxnui, soon hit the front hi the Puriri Handicap themifter never looked in danger of defeat. The favourite, Sir Robin, did not begin as well as usual but. he moved up rounding lhe turn and just held on in the run Io the judge to withstand a challenge from the outsider Veritable, who ran a surprisingly good race and who would have given more trouble had he not run about in the straight. Valdene was not prominent early, but she finished very fast into fblirth, and should be better suited over n slightly longer journey. The two-year-old Baron Hold displayed a lot of speed, but he spoilt, his chances by banging badly in the straight after being in second place to the turn. Flying Eagle faded out badly. Promising showings went to the credit of the two-year-blds Foxtoon and Marchby, who finished close up.

Form Maintained

Reproducing the good form he showed at Taranaki, Grand City finished very attractively to win the Borough Handicap decisively from Triune, who began better on this occasion and was always well placed. The favourite. Jack Tar, was prominent throughout, and when he took charge at the distance looked all over the

winner, but his final effort was slightly disappointing. The early leader Little Artist, after being made a good deal ot u s-e of, weakened over the .last furlong. Mai de Mer also failed to run on. Dutch Girl was doing her best work at the finish to get fourth, and Oriental Bay did best of the others. High Delight Scores. Making his first appearance for some time, High Delight spreadeagled the field over the concluding stages in the Tapu Handicap, and won very easily. He scored his first success on this course twelve months ago, but has done little since. He is a good type of galloper, and is likely to go on to further success. After being well out in front, three furlongs from home, Kenneth Robert hung on well for •second and looks to be on the improve. The third horse, Ohmaha, did not receive the best of runs, but finished attractively over the last furlong and his turn may not be far off. After being slow to begin, Silver Eagle was close up at the finish. The best of the others were Senacre, Ngawiri and Friskland.
