Tennis Tournament Opens In Masterton

NO MAJOR SURPRISES Dominion Special Service. MASTERTON, January 20. Beautiful sunny weather favoured the opening of the North Island tennis championships, being played in conjunction with the Wairarapa association’s championship and handicap tournament, on the Vasterton club’s courts today. A steady north-westerly wind blowing down the courts, however, proved disconcerting at times. One of the highlights of the day was the men's championship singles match between S. Painter, the 17-year-old Wellington Wilding Shield representative. and W. J. Webster, late of Greytown.

There were no major surprises. _ P. Hawksworth, the Wairarapa champion, easily won his singles against M. McLeod, of Martinborough: M. Ferkins had no difficulty in beating A. Mahupuka; and G. S. McLeod accounted for I. Hall and R. McL. Ferkins beat O. M. Bold.

Miss Z. Castle, a ranked 'Wellington player, beat Mrs. G. S. McLeod in the first round of the women’s singles, and Mrs. Hawksworth beat Miss I. Reader. One of the most interesting games in this section was between Miss J. Betts and Miss L. M. Shirrock, the latter winning 3- 7-5, 6-4. Results:— CHAMPIONSHIPS. Men's Singles. First round: S. The Canterbury lawn tennis team was successful in its challenge to Auckland for the Wilding Shield by winning seven matches to five. Canterbury had established a firm lead on the first day by-win-ning three singles and two doubles against the loss of one singlee. Today was n day of surprises and incidents. winning three of the singles, which brought the score to 5-4 in favour of the challenging team. At this stage there was an unusual happening. .A. D. Brown, Canterbury, who was leading 6-4 and 4-2 against J. T. Mayson, Auckland, slipped on the baseline and dislocated his shoulder. This caused an adjournment of more than an hour when Brown returned and finished the match by winning in straight sets.

C. Angus, captain of the Canterbury team, suffered his first defeat in Wilding Shield matches when he lost to J. W. Gunn, Auckland, in three advantage sets. Angas played a gallant uphill contest and went down with distinction as one of the finest players ever to take part in this event.

With the matches at 6-4 in favour of Canterbury, the result was dependent on the two doubles events, when Angas and Pattinson won their match against Gunn and Bedford. The issue was beyond doubt, and with Brown playing under difficulties on an adjoining court, the Canterbury pair defaulted. Results: — \ SINGLES.

An exceptionally high standard of tennis was shown in 'the third day’s play in the New Zealand junior championships in Wanganui today, when conditions were good, apart from a cross-couri breeze. The finalists in the boys’ singles are A. Burns and R. McKenzie (Wellington). lu-thb girls’ championship, D. Elson (Canterbury) is in the final, and she will play the winner of J. Wallace v. B. Potter, 'both of Auckland, in the finals, in which points will be counted, for the Wilding Cup. Auckland will have two representatives, a boy and a girl, Canterbury a girl, and Wellington a boy, making the position interesting apart from the winning of the titles. . In the boys’ doubles, I. Thompson' and H. Johnston, both of Waikato, will meet Burns (Auckland) and J. Smith (North Auckland), in the final tomorrow. A Canterbury pair, F. Fleetwood and. D. Elsoin, will play the final of the girls’ doubles against R. Hodges and M. Hodges (Auckland). With the final stages of events drawing near, today’s play produced some fine tennis in all sections.
